Book #2: A Game of Thrones (March 2012) – Shelf it.
It has been 5 weeks since my Thrones journey began. I went to Winterfell, Vaes Dothrak and back. Pre-BC (before children), I would have finished this tome of a book in, maybe, a week. These days, it takes me forever! The good news is, “A Game of Thrones” is very hard to put down. I find myself “stealing” time to read. I read in the car – at the stop lights or in traffic while the hubby drives. I read an hour or two before going to bed. I even bring it to work. It has been a long time since I felt this way about a book. It feels good. If you are wondering where I am, you will find my nose deeply buried in a world called Westeros.
George R.R. Martin created a new fantasy world filled with zombies, dragons, knights, kings and queens set in a “new” Middle Earth, Westeros. What is unique about this book is that each chapter is written based on the point of view of a third person. I like the way women are portrayed. Surprisingly, the story has several strong and passionate female characters. Feisty and scheming women. Mostly mothers. Relationships are intricately intertwined. Some story lines can even be considered romantic (e.g. Khal Drogo and Daenerys love affair), in a savage kind of way.
When you play the game of thrones, either you win or you die.
There is no middle ground.
So my verdict? Buy one (preferably, a hardcover if available) and Shelf it!
